Storever and MandrakeSoft Announce World Densest 1U Rack Server
For Immediate Release
2002/09/17 - Storever and MandrakeSoft announce a new world record of
density for 1U rack servers. The Storever OpenChassis allows to host 7
(seven) x86 compatible OpenBrick micro-servers in 1U. Thanks to
OpenChassis, the raw cost of dedicated hosting of a professional
dynamic site on a broadband 100 Mbps connection is now less than 7 EUR
per month and even less in USD. OpenBrick micro-servers pre-installed
with the Mandrake GNU/Linux distribution and provided with 1 year
hosting service will be distributed on the Storever (www.storever.com)
and MandrakeStore (www.mandrakestore.com) online shops in the next few
weeks.
According to Jean-Paul Smets, CEO of Nexedi and senior manager of
Storever, "what makes OpenChassis so unique is its vision based on
Freedom. Our vision is to provide users the freedom to setup their
server at home and get it hosted afterwards by their favourite ISP.
Therefore, instead of putting many motherboards inside a single 3U
chassis, we designed OpenChassis in order to put many OpenBrick
servers inside a single 1U chassis. Users can receive their own
OpenBrick at home, install it with their own gigabytes of data and
ship it by postal mail to their ISP to get a permanent 100 Mbps
connection for their site. In the whole process, the OpenBrick
micro-server remains the property of the user which is guarantees his
or her freedom."
For Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft, "OpenBrick and
Mandrake Linux Advanced Extranet Server make a perfect combination to
run so-called LAMP sites based on Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. With
OpenChassis, small companies, webmasters and developers can now get a
dedicated hosting service with the same performance as a multinational
company at a fraction of the cost. Because Mandrake Linux is so easy
to setup, we think that OpenBrick and OpenChassis will allow to extend
the market of GNU/Linux and Free Software towards people who never
thought it was so easy and so affordable."
OpenBrick micro-servers pre-installed with Mandrake Linux Advanced
Extranet Server and provided with 1 year of broadband Internet hosting
will be sold online by [1]MandrakeStore and [2]Storever. in the next
few weeks. Hosting will be provided by Storever through its ISP
partners. ISPs interested in hosting OpenBrick are welcome to join the
OpenBrick community.
